The Monk and His Blessings
Far up a great mountain lived a solitary monk. Once a year he would
travel down the laborious path to a small modest village at the base
of the mountain to bless everyone with peace and heath.
The monk visited everyone in the village. He saw the village chandler
and blessed his family. The chandler gave him some candles in gratitude.
The monk then visited the fishmonger, and blessed them too and
received a piece of lake trout as thanks. The monk moved onto every
business and household with his blessings and kindly refused as many
thank you gifts as he could. The last place he went was the village bank.
The banker welcomed him and said, "Father, my wife is taken ill,
please bless us with good health.". The monk gave his usual blessings.
The banker in turn said, "Please take these gold coins as a thanks.". The monk said,
they are no use to me, please distribute them to the village poor.
The banker insisted that he take the money but monk kindly refused again.
After insisting a couple more times the banker politely kept his money.
Soon later the wife came out of her dire illness and the banker
felt he owed the monk a great debt. The banker wondered what he could do
to repay the monk for the blessing of health. The next day he decided that
he would pay the chandler, the fish monger and everyone else that gave
something to the monk as thanks for the blessings. Everyone in the village
took the banker's money because he insisted and he was the banker.
A month later the banker's wife became ill again and now is resting in peace.
What did the banker eventually do?
The End
