Sci-fiction in Artificial Intelligence
What this explaination is about, is not to dimystify
the false promises and expectation of Artifical
Intelligence (A.I.) technology that will make our
lives easier and more productive. It is about where
we started and where we will end in the future with AI.
The first science fiction movie was "A Trip to the Moon" (1902).
It is about a science expedition to the moon and the surpising
adventure that evolved. This movie captured the imagination
of people at its time because no one had ever traveled to the moon,
and technology was not at an advanced state to even think it was
possible to reach the moon.
After learning to leave the earth, movie goers wondered
what the next dream would be that be shown to them on the screen.
In 1905 science proved that hidding near the sun and far enough
away from the earth, that a spaceship could travel forward in time,
and land on a future earth. Traveling back in time according to
science,
is not possible, but in the classic "Planet of the Apes" (1968), film
artists showed how alternative realities might exist, and that
humans
may not be as intelligent or even and civilaized as they seem.
From time travel to space travel to creating humans unaturally.
"I, Robot" (2004) was a film of a far futurisitic society where
robot servants were abundant as automobiles. These robots were
smart and followed instructions only, they did not have their own
motivations. However one day, one was created, that could dream and
and think out of its shell. This movie might make the viewer
reconsider their definition of what it is to be alive, and whether
robots are simply like pets under the law.
Artifical intelligence is an unbrealla term that includes
many things. Its orginal meaning is a machine that can solve
mathematical problems/proofs as creative as a human. Robots of the
future will not be as such, but that is where technology is
going. The question is ... When someone goes to watch a new sci-
fiction movie, will there be a difference between genuine human
characters and the AI robot personalities? Today telling the
the difference between a real actor and a CGI actor is a reflex.
