Second idea was what I ended up using, above.

After stickering to do insertions, I accidentally started going through my third idea to look for cancellations. That wasted a lot of time, and made me rush for the actual insertions.
Insertions were not optimal; 33 was possible. If I weren't rushed I'm sure I would have found this.
