Found the first 8 moves eventually, then experimented with lots of different continuations. I found two initial insertions which cancelled 4, but each only lead to a single cancellation on the second insertion.
Optimal insertions would give 34. I found both of the initial insertions which cancelled 4, but only checked every-other spot for each of the second insertions to save time, and so missed the single spot on each which cancelled 2.
