getting t&t sides, make rice at home
Attending other sections' lectures; "awake" caffeine chocolate bars at the flock shop
"It's not that serious"
Making sure I study on a full stomach
Actually study and do work during the day so you can relax before bed and go to bed not stressed
sleep 8 hours a night every night
Everybody talks about being kind to yourself and whatnot but when I actually learned to do it it made such a huge difference. Being strict and harsh to yourself doesn't help you do better. Being forgiving, curious, and encouraging does. It's not an easy skill to learn but just starting with something small helps turn the feedback loop around.
Surround yourself with the right people. Being around people who share your values and have similarly high aspirations really boosts your ability to achieve your goals and ambitions while also forming deep connections which you will carry with you throughout your life.
finding a study spot where you can lock in
Friends
No joke, get a full 8 hours of sleep when you can. And, rely on others, don't be scared to reach out and try to get to know some random person.

Text any GRT public transit stop number to 57555 to get the times until next buses/ion at that stop (only useful if you memorize your usual stops, otherwise Google Maps works well enough)

Write todo lists with deadlines with increasing granularity (ie do one for the week, then day, then hourly)
Talk to your classmates
Your grades don't matter, as long as you pass
Didn't get me through UW per se, but audit courses. It's amazing, you can show up and learn interesting content without needing to do any of the work! It's a win-win! More people should audit courses they think are interesting.
Start assignments early and prioritize your health.
Believe in yourself.
Indoor bridges and tunnel pathways
sometimes, for your own sake, you just need to let some marks go. if I'm ever crunched on time, I estimate how much time each task would take and how much it's worth in terms of overall marks. I prioritize the tasks that won't take too long but will have a big impact, and the assignment for which I have less than 1% of the final mark left but would take two hours to finish is the one I'll give up on
Github
Actually get enough sleep
Show your dedication and enthusiasm
Bold languages and technologies used. That increased my hit-rate on applications by a factor of 3.
Learn how to let go. Sometimes sacrifices must be made.
A lot of it is luck, don't take things personally
Don't use WaterlooWorks
Be nice during interviews
Good luck
i'm literally not competent, referrals mean so much (to an upsetting degree tbh)
everyone has their own path - if you're in your early or even late coops worrying about not getting that big tech job, just take a step back and focus on what YOU want and not on what other people are doing. you're in this industry for a long time, and you rlly don't need to get to FAANG or big tech in order to achieve your dreams/"make it" in this industry. just do what makes you happy and what you feel passionate about.
Pick your niche
Network! Be social! And don't let managers bully you
Spend a lot of effort on your resume. Consistently, even outside of application season. I guarantee you that it can be better. 10 hours/week is not unreasonable.
If you can't find a co-op as a first year in the first few rounds, keep waiting until continuous rounds. They are sometimes a hit or miss, but if you hit, you are set for future co-op opportunities.
Keep yapping
ur network is ur networth
Don't stress too much about it; don't take rejections too personally
networking
Ascertain company culture
network within a company when you're an intern
Try different positions to see what you like doing
Just develop skill and companies will follow
get referrals
NETWORK. Make those connections and reach out to people (hiring managers, recruiters, other employees at the company, etc.) because taking that initiative goes a long way and is way more effective than cold applying into a void of thousands of resumes.
do mock interviews
Make friends with upper years, they can refer you or give you good advice
Know what types of jobs you want, and bet on yourself. Bet on yourself to go into the field you're genuinely curious about.
Apply to every external posting you can find. Make your resume clean and simple.
make your resume bullet single line so a recruiter can understand them not an engineering manager
good luck
Try to put some personality into it (i.e. send out an email, follow up, be unique)
Regarding personal projects. If you don't share it, it is as if it didn't happen.
Your co-workers, classmates, managers, etc. won't remember you for being quiet, hardworking and anti-social, or for forced "coffee chats" where you're trying to get something out of them. True "networking" comes from being outgoing, friendly and enjoyable to work with, and from genuine connections you build with your peers.
Make friends with your colleagues and manager, if they like you, you will have a good shot of returning or being able to ask them for a reference to a company they know someone at.
Be open to experiences. Dip your toe in different fields, even if it's not exactly what your looking for. Explore different cities on your co-op, if possible. Prioritize learning over money.
Cover letters are BS. Even if they require it, you can submit a blank page and get an answer.
ChatGPT
Connections. Trust, talk to people and send emails.
Apply early.
have friends in high places, referrals are very useful (not so much for faang though)
cold-apply externally..all my good co-ops were from cold applying
It's good to have dreams, but be content with reality and make the best out of it
be very charitable to yourself on your resume
Learn course material. Take hard courses.
cold emailing works, leetcode before you get the interview
get lucky
Find your interest and start learning and doing projects by yourself.
Be enthusiastic and smile during interviews!
Go to the gym. It helps
get your resume critiqued by recruiters
Find someone who knows what they're doing and learn from them
Find the jobs that have fewer applications (UW works has a filter for this)
Apply externally far more than through waterloo works.
Coffe chats and refferals on LinkedIn
https://uwaterloo.ca/co-operative-education/blog/compiling-success-lessons-playstation-amazon-and-tesla
Message recruiters
drink coffee 1h before interview
ask good questions and assume things were done for a reason
Practice for interviews
Reach out to recruiters on LinkedIn before applying for a not-really-referral referral
After your first co-op, only apply to jobs you actually like, unless if you like to have "practice" interviews but those will likely just eat up your study/free time and add stress. It's surprisingly easy to overshoot and end up with 3+ interviews you don't want to do.
Even when applying though WW, reach out to recruiters early and ask your friends for referrals
Jokes aside, apply early. Check the Github pages everyday and have a good circle of friends that send you links to apply to internships/jobs the moment they drop. Follow LinkedIn recruiters that announce jobs. Grind LeetCode. Practice OAs with friends.
Talk to upper years early to figure out what lands them jobs
Befriend your manager; they're good references down the line
Apply to anything you're interested in. the 30% rule is very true — as long as you meet 30% of their requirements and are willing to learn the rest, just apply.
Lie on your resume
Stop making resumes that are a giant wall of black text. Make it stand out and make it highlight the most impressive things about you.
If you're ranked (but not matched) for a company in WaterlooWorks, email the recruiter to ask if the position is available for a future term. There's a chance you can get the job.
Know and get in touch with people who can give you internal referrals, followed by actually getting the referral.
You need to market yourself. Think of yourself as a product, why should anyone buy you?
Be confident and own your work like the beast that you are.
Adapt to the environment. No workplace is the same and its upto you to make sure you adapt to meet expectations.
Apply to everything even if you think you won't get in
don't be afraid to embellish your resume a bit (everyone does to an extent), and make sure to do your research on the company before the interview so you can sound more passionate and prepared
Do side projects
Hackathons and cold-emails
Cope about not getting FAANG by assuming they threw out half the applications without looking because they were overwhelmed

Meaning of life, eh? I think that this depends on each person, and can be clarified through an arduous process of eliminating things, and figuring out what matters to you. For me, I don't know what it is yet, but finding meaning is the most important question that I'll try to answer next. Remember that you will die someday, and that there's no time to waste.

So... in first year, I was a starry-eyed kid, not knowing how to cook, not knowing how to do anything. Back in MKV, I just learned how to boil dumplings the week before, and started on grinding for hackathons. On one fateful day, after grinding for a hackathon with a buddy, I wanted some freshly baked frozen pizza. I unwrapped the pizza, grabbed my roommate's tray and started cooking. After the pizza started smelling nice and ready, I started looking at the oven. And lo and behold, the pan started to warp a bit. I thought to myself, that looks weird, isn't it? I opened the door and saw the pan melt down towards the bottom of the oven, forming a puddle. This puddle was no ordinary puddle, as it caught on fire and caught me in a whirlwind of panic. I call my hackathon buddy up and show him the mess, only to face endless laughter.
After sending my roommate down for a fire extinguisher, I hear the fire alarm going off, sending everyone outside as the firemen came, on this particular cold September night. Needless to say, as everyone wondered who burned their oven, I too joined in on the speculation.

The most common regrets involve not joining more or a specific extracurricular. Some also regret not being more outgoing/meeting more people, and a few regret not doing an exchange term.
Not trying to have been more physically active (ie. intramurals)
I wish I had learned to focus on learning and not grades earlier.
No exchange term
Just generally being naive in relationships and not prioritizing my loved ones as I should have - was a learning experience though
Not being more outgoing earlier

thinking a study trip class would be fun and easy
Being too stubborn to ask for help
I wish I joined more clubs and joined them earlier to meet more people
I would have liked to focus a bit more on coop rather than going all in on research.
Not joining clubs earlier. We already had our first 2-3 terms taken away from us and it took me another 2-3 terms to finally try joining some of the clubs I'd been eyeing. Now I feel like there's so many potential hobbies I haven't explored but it's too late.
try to branch out more
Not doing my exchange term in Switzerland
Not going out to party or socialize enough, and not joining sport clubs earlier

Your manager on your co-op, no matter how seemingly friendly or chill, no matter if they still send you IG reels to this day, is not your friend. Going through heartbreak to be honest. That's something that doesn't necessarily get easier without a lot of work on oneself. You'd need to pick up the pieces of yourself, and try to understand where you've gone wrong and how you can be a better person independent of trying to define yourself in terms of someone else.

Wenhu Chen CS486
It was during 2A/2B I felt so isolated and the workload was insane. I didn't really know how to handle the work and being alone all the time and I got extremely depressed, nothing mattered to me anymore except passing school which I knew I had to get through because tutition was so expensive. I would pull multiple all nighters every week and soon I couldn't recognize myself in the mirror anymore which led to further body image struggles. I still suffer with this but therapy has helped me a lot.
