Glorious Discussions Concerning Interactive Entertainment: OFF

May 30th, 2012 No comments

Worry not, I did not forget about you all, my lovelies. The next GDCIE is going to be Tuesday June 5, 2012 at 6:00pm in MC2017. We will be discussing:

OFF, by Unproductive Fun Time
http://forum.starmen.net/forum/Fan/Games/OFF-by-Mortis-Ghost

The actual download link is way down that page, after the screenshots. Can I trust you to find it? The game was originally made in french. The link given is for the translated english version. If you would rather play it in its native tongue, the forum page also has a link to the original version (though apparently there are some bugs that are fixed in the english release, but not in the original).

It’s an RPG Maker game, so hopefully you don’t despise that sort of thing with every fiber of your soul or something. It’s also a little longer than what we tend to discuss; it’ll take you a few hours to play through to the end. For best results, try and find some time to spend with it this weekend.

Nothing left to say,

Reminder: GDCIE Fairy Well

May 28th, 2012 No comments

The next GDCIE of this spring term is happening tomorrow, and unlike last week we were actually allowed to book a room, so there shouldn’t be any weird room stuff happening (I hope). So, yeah, tomorrow is Tuesday May 29, 2012, and at 6:00pm in MC2017 we will be discussing:

Fairy Well, by Wide Pixel Games
http://noname.c64.org/csdb/release/?id=103151

Remember, you’ll need a C64 emulator for this one.

May 25th, 2012 No comments

Woops. Meant to do this last night. Be will be having our regularly scheduled development night tonight, Friday May 25 at 7:00pm in SLC2143. Again, we should be keeping with our new tradition of having a few snack-like things there.

Glorious Discussions Concerning Interactive Entertainment: Fairy Well

May 23rd, 2012 No comments

Let’s try this discussion thing again. The next GDCIE will be Tuesday May 29, 2012 at 6:00pm in MC2017. We will be discussing:

Fairy Well, by Wide Pixel Games
http://noname.c64.org/csdb/release/?id=103151

We’re going retro here. This game was released just last year for the Commodore 64. You can even buy it on cart here, if you so desire. More likely, we’ll all be playing it on emulator. You can download a cart image from the link above. VICE is a popular C64 emulator, which you can download here. If you’re having any trouble getting up and running with this, leave a comment or fling an email at us.

This game might take you a while to get through. It seems like there’s a lot to it, but I haven’t really spent enough time playing myself to give a good estimated playtime. So, sorry about that.

Glorious Discussions Concerning Interactive Entertainment: Kyoto

May 17th, 2012 No comments

After a slight delay, the GDCIE is properly getting started for the term. For those who are curious as to what the GDCIE is all about, see this page. The first GDCIE of the term will be on Tuesday May 22, 2012 at 6:00pm in MC2017. We will be discussing:

Kyoto, by Illogic Tree
http://illogictree.com/games/kyoto/

Following the feedback I received from last term, the discussions are not beginning with a ridiculously complex game like Dwarf Fortress. Instead, this game is alienating in an entirely different way. The game won’t take very long to experience (the use of the word experience instead of play might be significant), but will probably require a bit of patience to actually get something out of it.

Note that the game is technically still in a beta form. In fact the latest build at this time is from just yesterday. Which means that we are sort of discussing an incomplete game (ha, Dwarf Fortress parallels).

Also of note, this discussion is currently scheduled for Tuesday, which means so far the discussions are slated to follow on the same day every week. If you have a problem with this time, or would just prefer a different day, let us know. Seriously; yell at us or leave a comment or send an email or put a brick through a window (not my window) or something. Similarly, let us know if you really like Tuesdays and think they’re the best date. Since there’s likely fewer people around in the summer term, we can hopefully find a day that’s good for everybody interested.

GDCIE: Extra Credits (This Tuesday (Tomorrow))

May 14th, 2012 No comments

Hey all,

On par with our normal prepardness, I am now sending official notice that our first discussion is tomorrow at 6pm in MC2017.  We will be discussing the Extra Credits video Kinect Disconnect (found here). You can watch it beforehand, but we’ll also be watching it at the beginning of the meeting.

Have a wonderful day, don’t die, eat fresh, and come to our meetings.

Farewell.

RSS feed fixed.

It was pointed out at yesterday’s Dev Night that our website’s RSS feed was broken, and indeed has been broken for a couple of months. I’m happy to report that the feed is now fixed and in proper working order. Apologies to those of you who haven’t been getting RSS updates!

Start of term dev night

May 7th, 2012 3 comments

We’re starting this term off with a dev night; a chance to hang out, see what other people are working on, show off your own projects, get some help, or maybe even actually get something productive done (not guaranteed). The first dev night will be this Friday, May 11, 2012 at 7:00pm in SLC 2143. The development nights will recur regularly, once every two weeks, thereafter.

More news on what we’re doing this term and when the first of our proper meetings/events is happening will follow eventually.

Nothing left to say,
Jonathan Semple
