This past Monday we finished the second term of existence for the GDCIE. To review, we discussed:
A minor typo that could have resulted in a major mix-up: the previous post said “SLC Comfy Lounge”, when I indeed meant the “MC Comfy Lounge”. So, just to be perfectly crystal clear, we will be meeting tomorrow, Tuesday July 26, 2011 at 6:00pm in the MC Comfy Lounge for our End of Term Social.
See you there, and don’t forget to bring any spare game pads you have for some 0space blasting fun!
Greetings, loyal game development members and enthusiasts. This Monday evening saw a lovely deathmatch of the week’s GDCIE’s game, 0space. There were thrills, spills, and, well, kills. ‘Twas quite a hoot. Missed out on the festivities? That’s all right, because coming up is the End of Term Social event!
In fact, we are just so darn excited about this upcoming event that we simply couldn’t bear to wait another day. The event will be held tomorrow, Tuesday July 26, 2011 at 6:00pm at the MC Comfy Lounge. Why so soon? Exams draw closer and closer, and we’d really like to nab as many fellow developers as possible before they are upon us. That, and those in attendance tonight all only had a free evening tomorrow. So spoketh the people!
What is the plan, you ask? For the most part we intend on gathering together in the MC Comfy Lounge en masse, and then basically go from there. We figure we’ll either all go out for food or order in pizza (depending on numbers), followed by game discussions, some more 0space multiplayer (bring your game pads!), and whatever else the collective wants to do. We have a penchant for jolly good ‘ol end-of-term socials, so don’t miss out!
The community jam is over, and it was good, but you’re going to have to wait for details on that. I’m just here to remind you that the last GDCIE of the term is tomorrow, Monday July 24, 2011 at 6:00pm in MC4059. We will be playing and discussing:

It’s a multiplayer splitscreen game, but don’t worry if you haven’t had a chance to try it or don’t have anyone who will play it with you; we will have gamepads and a projector at the discussion. That’s right. In an unprecedented move we will be playing the game while we talk about it.

It’s here, it’s here! Today we’re starting! We’ll be making a game together, starting tonight and lasting the weekend, for our Community Jam. We’re going to be in SLC room 2109 (take the staircase between Timmies and the Bomber. It’s the 1st door on the right). The room is a little hidden so we can meet up at 7:00pm on the couches in front of the Turnkey and head over (though for those who show up late, the room isn’t too hard to find). Hope to see you out there! (and execs don’t forget to come up with a few good themes!)
The term is down to it’s last dregs of life before exams begin, which means there is only one discussion remaining. The last GDCIE of the term will be Monday July 25, 2011 at 6:00pm in MC4059. We will be discussing:
0space, by Beau Blyth

This is something light and fun to end the term. It’s multiplayer, and local only. If you’ve got someone handy to play it against, give it a try. Doing so is not necessary, however, because we will be bringing gamepads and playing it on the projector on Monday. We’re ending the discussions this term by hanging out and leaving each other as bloody smears in 2d, zero-gravity combat arenas while we discuss the game’s design.
Nothing left to say,

The next GDCIE is tomorrow (or today, depending how you look at it), Monday July 18, 2011 at 6:00pm in MC4059. We’re discussing:
Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer, by Nicolau Chaud

This is the penultimate discussion of the term, so let’s make it good.

The UW Game Development Club is proud to present the first ever Community Jam! We’re getting together next weekend and all, as a club, building one game together, based on a central theme. We think this is the term to host this type of event, since there are only a few of us here and it won’t be super crazy to organize.
How will we pick the theme? What role can I fill? When will this thing start?! That’s part of what we’ll be discussing at this week’s GDCIE (tomorrow at 6:00pm in MC4059) to hopefully schedule it so that everyone can come.
If you can’t attend the GDCIE tomorrow but are still interested in this Community Jam, leave a comment telling us your thoughts about this whole business. But please do try to attend the meeting tomorrow, since compromises are much better achieved in person.
Cheers,
Sherban
On Saturday July 16th the UW-GDC Executive Council will be meeting at 1:00pm in the SLC lounge area (on the couches in front of turnkey). Why am I telling you this? Because we want to open this meeting to those persons who wish to become Executive Council members. Reasons to get on the Council:
We’ll also be discussing interesing things like updates to the website and events to finish off the term.
So join us, if you want to join us.
Cheers,
Sherban
I’m a couple days late with this, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be a discussion next week. You’re not off the hook yet. The next GDCIE will be Monday July 18, 2011 at 6:00pm in MC4059. We will be discussing:
Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer, by Nicolau Chaud
http://rpgmaker.net/games/2068/
This is a game I’ve been wanting to discuss for a while, but I guess I’ve been saving it. Since my original plan of choosing a Half-Life 2 mod to discuss this week didn’t happen, I figured now was as good a time as any to talk about this cheerful little game. It should take you about an hour to play through, maybe two; more or less depending on how fast you go through it and how many times you need to retry things.
If you’re stuck you can look at the readme for instructions. The main thing which might give you trouble, but is not explained in game, is that you can keep the sustained traps going by alternately pressing the numbers 1 and 2 on your keyboard repeatedly and quickly.
