Ok here are some real life situations I have solved in bash in rEAL liFE at jobs even:
An interview question I had: write a program that takes an arbitrary number of text files as input and prints the top ten words used in the file to stdout, bonus points for a CLI
Testing anything that writes to files (runsuite :D )
Taking a dump of facebook messenger logs (in XML) and converting them to be actually readable
Change settings for things that don't have a gui (using multitouch in linux)
